Prof. Ahmed Farag El-Kased, President of Menoufia University, announced the success of the Oncology Surgery Department team at the University's Oncology Institute in performing a highly delicate and complex surgical procedure to remove a massive retroperitoneal abdominal tumor measuring approximately 30 × 45 cm and weighing more than 30 kilograms. The operation is considered one of the rare and highly specialized surgical procedures that require exceptional medical expertise and advanced facilities.
The University President explained that the patient, a 27-year-old man, had been suffering from persistent abdominal pain and severe digestive difficulties. Comprehensive medical examinations and imaging studies revealed the presence of a giant tumor extending behind the pancreas and surrounding the left kidney, stomach, and spleen. The tumor was also encasing the major arteries and veins supplying the intestines and had extended around the aorta and the inferior vena cava, making the surgical intervention extremely delicate and complex.
Prof. El-Kased noted that the patient was prepared urgently for surgery, which was successfully performed by the Oncology Surgery Department team under the leadership of Prof. Ahmed Sabry El-Gamal, Dean of the Institute.
The University President emphasized that this achievement reflects the distinguished expertise and advanced capabilities of the University's medical professionals in managing rare and highly complex surgical cases with remarkable efficiency. He added that the medical sector at Menoufia University continues to witness significant development in healthcare services and specialized medical disciplines, in line with the University's strategy to strengthen the healthcare system and provide advanced medical care for patients, particularly in light of the successive achievements accomplished by the University Hospitals and the Oncology Institute during the University's Golden Jubilee year.
For his part, Prof. Ahmed Sabry El-Gamal, Dean of the Oncology Institute, stated that the surgery lasted several hours due to the enormous size of the tumor and its close association with major blood vessels and vital abdominal organs. He explained that the success of the operation was the result of full coordination and teamwork among the surgical, anesthesia, and medical care teams within the Institute, reflecting the advanced medical standards achieved by the Institute in performing complex surgeries and managing rare and challenging cases.
The surgical team included Dr. Abdullah Salah, Lecturer of Oncology Surgery; Dr. Abdel Aziz Saqr, Lecturer of Oncology Surgery; Dr. Ahmed El-Kilani, Lecturer of Surgery; Dr. Ahmed El-Ghazawy, Assistant Lecturer of Oncology Surgery; Dr. Youssef El-Berry, Resident Physician in Oncology Surgery; and Dr. Mohamed Riyad, Resident Physician in Oncology Surgery.
The anesthesia team also played a vital role in managing the case and included Dr. Mervat El-Maghraby, Assistant Lecturer of Anesthesia, and Dr. Raghda Gamal, Assistant Lecturer of Anesthesia. The nursing team included Abdel Rahim Salah Mohamed Yehia, Dalia Magdy, and Zaki Hamed.
It is worth noting that the optimal treatment plan for the patient was discussed through a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting attended by Prof. Ahmed Sabry El-Gamal, Professor of Oncology Surgery and Dean of the Institute; Prof. Al-Shaimaa Mahmoud El-Hanafy, Professor of Oncology and Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research; Prof. Amira Hosny Hegazy, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology; Dr. Mohamed Said El-Senbawy, Lecturer of Oncology and Director of the Oncology Institute Hospital; and Dr. Mohamed Shalaby, Lecturer of Radiation Oncology.
The Institute also follows a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach for reviewing and discussing all patient cases. These meetings bring together a distinguished group of professors and consultants from various specialties to develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient according to their medical condition, thereby contributing to improved treatment outcomes and higher recovery rates.
